Life Hacks
Life hacks are all the rage. They help us sort out the mess with a little tip from someone who's done it. Hanging out or living downtown is no exception to that. And I figure there are a lot of things I've learned about getting around that are bound to be useful to someone. Honestly, I wish I'd have known some of them ahead of time. And while most of the hacks refer specifically to getting around downtown, there's some that talk about getting around in life.

The Curse of Overthinking…
Trying to ward off the curse of overthinking seems futile. You know you’re going down sketchy paths of your own creation, but you can’t stop yourself from careening into the abyss. The struggle is real …and exhausting. That’s where I’ve been. Between wrapping up the school year and a sideways personal life, I just kinda struggled to come up with something important to say. I want to post regularly, of course, but I find myself, well, overthinking the whole thing and stagnating in a pit of doubt. If you’re an overthinker, you get it. Try as you might, sometimes you just can’t get out of the feedback loop. Then one…

When it rains…
Lawdy. Let it stop raining. Please. Memphis can’t catch a break. The rivers are cresting. The roads are falling apart (again). Rain for days on end now. Actual footage and memes galore in tribute. When it rains around here though, Memphis goes sideways. Legit. When it rains here, it gets weird. People lose their minds. They lose their ability to operate motor vehicles, which, admittedly, is only sketchy at best in good weather. (Hint: Stop braking for quite literally no reason whatsoever.) We all get mopey and pissed off. Unless you’re that one guy who’s just gleeful and loves jumping in potholes-turned-swimming-pools, it’s chaos. Rain downtown is a special kind…

Ah, Valentine’s Day…
If you’re like me, you’re probably none-too-pleased for Valentine’s Day to be upon us. Don’t get me wrong, I WANT to like it, but it doesn’t seem to want to like me. In preparation for the dreaded event, I thought maybe I’d offer a few ways to survive it when you’d rather crawl under a rock — and secretly hope it crushes you. But, Kid… it’s a manufactured holiday driven by consumerism. I get that. I’m not looking to rack up material things as “proof” that someone loves me. Even worse, I don’t like the pressure society puts on guys to get it right or end up some failure in…

15 Things to Know about Being Mental
I’ve learned that if you can’t laugh at your mental illness(es) sometimes, you really will lose your damn mind — and your sense of self. I’ve lost both. Then I found ’em chasing each other through the broken glass of a downtown alley, cut myself up dragging them back against their will. If you love someone who’s living life despite their mental illness, there are some things you might appreciate knowing so you both stay a little more sane. That said, I’m not a licensed professional and this is purely anecdotal and from my own experiences and work with my therapist. This kind of took on a life of its…

Day 14: Proud
“Write about what you are most proud of in your life right now.” Proud? Oi. The Struggle Bus So I’ve been struggling with the blogging challenge the past few days. Day 10 was to share a favorite soup recipe, but I don’t use recipes. Best I can tell you is go to Bardog and get the soup of the day because they’re all amazing. #LobsterBisque Day 11 was to share a story post about my favorite thing I did last summer. When I read that, I laughed. I spent last summer learning (read “struggling like hell”) to appreciate the quiet. That was agonizing. On day 12, it was to write…
